Himalayan Cedarwood is a different botanical species to Cedarwood Atlas (cedrus atlantica), so is not a 'drop-in' replacement, but it has lots of similarities. If you have never tried it, ask us for a sample, you will not look back!
Used in aromatherapy, fragrance and personal care products with widely reported antiseptic, antifungal and medicinal benefits.
This is a natural product extracted from Cedrus deodara. The oil is obtained through steam distillation of roots and stumps of the C. deodara trees, widely grown and managed in government forests in the Himalayan region. The trees are protected under Indian law and the provision of the cedarwood for processing is carried out by Government rangers in a controlled process. Our Producer have sponsored that for every tree harvested, four more trees are planted, of which two make it to full maturity after 4 years. Trees are not felled but die of natural circumstances such as age, wind and particularly during snow fall. This makes the provision of Himalayan timber and essential oil sustainable and maintains the stunning Himalayan cedarwood landscape whilst supporting the local economy. Once a tree is felled, the remaining stump has to be fully extracted, otherwise it may take up to 20 years to reach full height and during that time encouraging predators to thrive. The stumps can weigh up to 400kg. They are broken into manageable size and then transported to our Producers the steam distillation facility. The Producer pays the Indian government agency a license for all materials provided.
After initial steam distillation, the crude cedarwood oil undergoes a second rectification to remove unpleasant phenolic components leaving the rectified Himalayan cedarwood oil, ready for export. Our producer also creates a Himalayan Cedarwood oleoresin, solvent extracted using hexane (which is then removed using a vacuum pump). This product is high in atlantones.
