Botanical  Source: Cymbopogon Flexuosus

INCI Name: Cymbopogon Flexuosus oil

REACH Name: Cymbopogon flexuosus, ext.

Disclaimer: The information provided by Khush Ingredients is a summary of information from producers.  All information is provided without warrant or liability.

Description:

Traditional Cochin lemongrass oil is widely used as a fragrance ingredient in a wide range of personal care products and extensively in aromatherapy. Certain types of lemongrass are also used as a flavouring ingredient.

Khush Ingredients offers three types of lemongrass oil at present, conventional, organic and a botanical variation known as Lemongrass citratus (Cymbopogon citratus), which is more widely used as a flavouring ingredient.  This information relates to conventional Cymbopogon flexuosus, which we import from Cochin region of India.  The oil is produced from the steam distillation of the dried grass of cymbopogon flexuosus, grown principally in fields in southern parts of India.

There is also extensive lemongrass grown in other parts of the world including Indonesia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and the West Indies, Our current supply from India reflects the high volume produced, with good understanding of the material and a beneficial cost base ensuring we can deliver cost effective, consistent material to our customers at a fair price.

Our sources of lemongrass oil are ethical producers who annually declare that they are against animal testing and against other exploitative practices.

As a grass, lemongrass flourishes in hot and wet conditions.  In Southern India, there is growth all year round, but the main crop is harvested in April/May and a second harvest in September is usually possible.   The best quality and best prices for lemongrass oil are normally available from June each year.

As the source is a low value, low yielding grass, the farmers carry out an initial field distillation to produce a crude lemongrass oil.  This is procured by our Kochin partners who transport the crude lemongrass oil some 500 to 1000km to their production facilities where they check the quality and carry out further purifications to produce the grade we import.  The oils are normally packed in 25 or 180kg Food grade HDPE plastic drums, which we ask to be specified to UN packing group III.  The oils are hot filled into the drums and care is taken to avoid moisture and air in the containers before they are sealed.  As the oil cools (and arrives in a European winter) the drums will be somewhat imploded.  This is normal and the drums are designed to allow this without leaking or affecting the product.  In fact this process ensures very little air is present in the drum to deteriorate the oil.

Some have asked for the oil to be supplied in steel drums.  Unfortunately citral reacts in the presence of the metal and whilst the reaction products are not nasty, it still will have changed the characteristics of the oil.  Aluminium and glass containers are also fine, but cost effectively we normally supply in Food grade HDPE.  Please recycle your containers after use.

Khush also understands that there is tremendous pressure on the farmers for their oils and these are not wealthy large landowners.  As such there is some temptation to adulterate the oils with synthetic citral.  Lemongrass oil has around 65 to 74% natural citral present, a combination of geranial and neral.  Our customers are seeking to buy 100% natural oils, and we ensure that we and our supply partners carry out due diligence in the supply process. Such due diligence includes attending field distillations, using the same trustworthy farmers, carrying out periodic C14 testing at the University of Alabama (ask us about this if you don’t know) and paying the right price for the crude lemongrass oil.   As such, Khush Ingredients lemongrass oil may not to be the lowest price available, but there is a good reason for that.

We import directly from Kochin, India (usually via Sri Lanka) on a route that takes about 8 weeks from order to arrive in our warehouse.   The essential oil is safe enough to air freight so we can receive and deliver the oil by air within three weeks.

Shipments are confirmed after careful batch selection and pre-shipment samples are approved by us.  All our oils comply with REACH regulations for which both Khush Ltd UK and Khush BV in Netherlands are fully registered.

We also offer an organic Lemongrass oil grown in specialist organic plantations in India and Sri Lanka.  Please email us if you are interested in Organic oils as we have produced a separate specification sheet for this material.  Samples of all materials are available on request.

SHELF LIFE:

Whilst we try and deliver lemongrass oil within 12 months of production, the shelf life is now stated as three years.  We have lemongrass samples which are over 8 years old and are still in good condition.  Storage away from heat, air and moisture prevent the product from degradation.

The best options for maximising shelf life is either to

  1. a) Use a nitrogen purge capability
  2. b) Do not leave a container part full

We suggest a reference sample is taken of the fresh material when first delivered.  This should be retained in optimum conditions.  The balance of the container can then be compared, at points in the future, to the reference sample for signs of degradation of odour or colour change.  If there is not significant difference in colour and odour then the material is okay to use.  We suggest re-check every 12 months.

Certification

Khush Ingredients supplies a certificate of analysis with every batch, identifying major components and providing the GC trace from the producer.

Safety:

Our customers receive a Safety Data Sheet and a sales specification with IFRA guideline usage levels.  We send this to our customers but not otherwise as we do not want you to assess the safety of other sourced lemongrass oils with our carefully managed sources.
